Summary
On May 11, 1899, Karl Creelman, an intrepid young man from Nova Scotia, set out on his journey to become the first Canadian to ride a bicycle around the world. Departing from Truro, Nova Scotia, he ventured across North America, then to Australia and Sri Lanka, then northwards to India, Egypt, Europe and Great Britain before returning home in 1902. Avid traveller and photographer Louise Trotter learned about Karl serendipitously in 2016 and then spent three years researching Karl’s journey, mapping out his route, and reviewing newspaper articles and historical facts related to the time he travelled. That’s when her journey became clear - to follow Karl’s route around the world, take photos of the places he visited and write about the adventure. Karl travelled for two years, three months and 24 days, travelling 51,283 miles by bicycle, walking 1,600 miles and sailing 34,558 miles. Louise has planned a 75,000 kilometre journey that is anticipated to take 5 years. She is being as authentic as possible to Karl’s original route and stopping in those locations that he documented on his trip but is not travelling worldwide by bicycle. She is completing Karl’s route in segments — taking full advantage of 21st-century means of transportation. Karl's achievement in circumventing the globe on a bicycle in 1899 is currently an unrecognized historical event and certainly an unfamiliar story to most Nova Scotians, let alone Canadians. Louise will be documenting her expedition in the 'Karl Chronicles' to acknowledge this notable Canadian traveller and his accomplishment travelling around the world.
