Jalan Penarikan recognized as the ‘oldest’ trade route existed in Malaysia. Its existence was owed to the vast exposure written in Salalatus Salatin.
Unknown to many, there is another route connected the Eastern Frontier from West Coast of Malaysia. It’s call “Sembrong-Indau” route by ancient travellers.
In 14th September 2016, a group of explorer will attempt to cross this route using reference reported by Dato’ Seri Amar DiRaja to Royal Geographical Society in London sometime in 1894.
Dato’ Seri Amar DiRaja reported that these route was first explored by Dato’ Salleh Perang in 1874 during his efforts to survey the state of Johore in making the first geodesy map. His finding was presented in Adelaide’s Jubilee Exhibition in 1887. In 1893, young British Surveyor named Harry Lake, employed by Sultan of Johore to survey a terrain for laying railway track crossed the route explored by Dato’ Salleh Perang in 1874 from Endau. Onboard SS Panti, he journey 30km upstreams of Indau River and continue West by canoe until Semberong River in West Peninsula. He completed his journey in 10 months. His finding was also presented together with Dato’ Seri Amar DiRaja in February 1894 at Royal Geographical Society of London.
This expedition is planning to explore this watery route using kayak from West Cost of Batu Pahat to the mouth of South China Sea in Endau within 10 days imitating efforts done by Dato’ Salleh Perang in 1874.
